About Somerset England

Various meanings are given for the name Somerset but the best one must be ‘the land of the summer people’ It is a magical county with hidden treasure to suit all tastes. There are family beaches and coastal resorts, plus rural Somerset is renowned for its rolling hills like the Mendips and Quantocks. Exmoor National Park and the internationally important large flat expanses of land including the Somerset Levels are also a big attraction.

Taunton is the county town and there are two cities in Somerset. Bath, which is famous for its Roman Baths and Wells with its magnificent cathedral is the smallest city in England. Cheddar cheese comes from the village of Cheddar where there is also the magnificent Cheddar Gorge which reaches 500 feet in places. Glastonbury is known as the birthplace of Christianity and it is also home to the Glastonbury Music Festival undoubtedly one of the biggest and best known arts and music festivals in Europe
