There is a thriving market at the cathedral end of the street at Wells which is held every Saturday and Wednesday.
In 1695, the quaker, William Penn the founder of Pennsylvania preached to a huge crowd in the market place He was arrested for unlawful assembly but returned some weeks later to continue his crusade.
