The pretty town of Wiveliscombe was once famous for its cloth and one speciality was called a cloth called 'penistones'. This cloth was stretched well past its normal limits and as a result shrank when wet.owners of slaves dressed them in this cloth to make it more difficult to escape. Photographs of slaves wearing clothes that were too tight and small are a result of them wearing 'penistones'
